The 2026 Gambit Invitational: A Masterclass in Rapid Chess

The boards have been packed away, and the clocks have stopped ticking, but the energy from the 2nd Gambit Invitational Rapid Chess Championship still lingers at Gloria Gardens. As the organizer and Patron of Gambit Chess Club (ISAAC MUNANIRA), it was my absolute pleasure to extend invitations to this elite field of 22 players for an unforgettable weekend on March 14th and 15th, 2026.

We wanted this event to be a true “team training” for the Gambits Club and invited members. Players enjoyed free registration and were fully catered, with complimentary lunch and drinks, plus refreshments during the morning and afternoon sessions. While the surroundings in Namugongo were serene and green, the battles on the boards were anything but peaceful.

Meet the Heavyweights

Before the first pawn was pushed, the field was already buzzing with talent. We invited a mix of home-grown Gambit stars and elite guest players:

The Gambit Club Defenders

  • Akut Deng Kur (2154): The defending champion of the 1st Gambit Invitational (2025) and winner of the 2025 Kantinti Memorial U1900 section.
  • Paul Wanderema (2016): A consistent veteran who was the 1st runner-up in last year’s invitational.
  • Abdul Shakuru Wagodo (2035): Entering the event on a hot streak after winning the 2026 Eldoret Open and the 2025 Ibanda Open.
  • David Mugisha (1971): A solid performer for the Gambit team who took 3rd place in the inaugural invitational.
  • Innocent Baguma (1831): The youngest and current National Junior Champion (2026), fresh off a solid showing in the Olympiad Qualifiers.
  • Ivan Jalagatha Mugisha (1840): A Gambit team player who recently took 2nd in the 2025 Innovation Cup U1900.
  • Jully Mutisya (1714): The 2025 Kenya National Ladies Champion and a member of the Kenyan 2026 Olympiad team.
  • Jimmy Carlos Balewa (1801): A seasoned operator who finished 5th in the previous edition.
  • Rogers Kalema (1871): Known for flashes of brilliance on the board.
  • Hannah Zion Mawejje (1728): A promising junior player using this as a chance to prove herself against the “big guns”.

The Invited Guests

  • IM Elijah Emojong (2109): A 2-time Olympian and serial tournament winner affectionately known as “Super IM”
  • Mark Wasswa Nyola (2081): The 2026 National Champion and a two-time Olympiad representative for Uganda.
  • FM Bob Gilbert Bibasa (2028): A 5-time Olympian who recently qualified for the 2026 national team.
  • Samuel Gai Ngong (1994): Arrived with a perfect 100% record from his recent Kireka Open 2025 victory.
  • Adol Chol Wech (1936): A dangerous competitor with recent podium finishes in the Kiambu Open and 12-Square Series.
  • Morris Sangalo (2064): A board 2 silver medalist from the 2025 Premier Bet League.
  • Samuel Were (1941): Winner of the 2024 Bungoma Open.
  • Olivia Asiimwe (1837): A rising star who recently finished 2nd in the 2026 National Women’s Championship.
  • Isaac Mudangi (1881): A self-proclaimed “giant-killer” returning to the tournament circuit.
  • Derrick Sanya (1820): A YouTuber and organizer looking to let his chess do the talking after winning the 2025 National League with Kireka.
  • Bonny Namangala (1872): A solid club player who earned his spot through a fierce cage match.
  • Ivan Mukuye (1806): The Comrades Chess Club patron and fellow YouTuber.

Nine Rounds of Intensity

Over two days and nine grueling rounds, the “blades” remained sharp. Here are some of the most notable clashes:

  • Round 1: Teammates Jimmy Balewa and David Mugisha faced off in an epic opening showdown.
  • Round 2: IM Elijah Emojong took down Gambit master Paul Wanderema in a fierce battle of wits.
  • Round 3: The highly anticipated match of champions featured Wasswa Mark Nyola against Samuel Gai Ngong—two great rivals who did not disappoint.
  • Round 4: Nyola continued his path by meeting the legendary IM Emojong in a heated battle.
  • Round 5: Kenyan Lady Champion WCM Jully Mutisya went right to the wire against Abdul Shakuru Wagodo.
  • Round 6: Ivan Mukuye displayed a masterclass opening trap to overcome Samuel Were.
  • Round 7: Rising star Olivia Asiimwe showcased her incredible skill in a head-to-head with WCM Jully Mutisya.
  • Round 8: Derrick Sanya managed a brilliant tactical shot to save himself against Isaac Mudangi.
  • Round 9: After fighting back from three losses, Isaac Mudangi crushed Rogers Kalema in a positional masterclass.

The Final Standings

The competition remained tight until the final move, but Wasswa Mark Nyola proved why everything he touches turns to gold. He finished with 7 points to be crowned the Gambit Invitational Rapid Champion.
