What a breathtaking week it has been at the Imperial Botanical Beach Hotel in Entebbe! As we cross the threshold of Round 8 and stare down the barrel of the final round, the 17th edition of the Africa Youth Chess Championship (AYCC) 2026 has delivered everything promised: elite strategy, raw human emotion, and an atmosphere that has captured the hearts of hundreds of visitors across the continent.

From a Tricky Start to Lakeside Serenity

If we are being completely candid, the opening 48 hours tested everyone’s patience. Sorting out names and acquiring proper accreditations for a massive field of over 900 young minds brought some early administrative friction.

But true to the spirit of the game, the tournament quickly found its cruising, calm pace. Since then, the environment has been nothing short of tranquil. Many of our visiting international delegates and players have openly marveled at the sheer serenity of our lakeside venue. The gentle breezes sweeping off Lake Victoria have turned out to be incredibly friendly and accommodating—providing a peaceful sanctuary for accompanying parents, coaches, and delegations resting between the high-stakes rounds.

A Convergence of Chess Royalty

Today, May 20, 2026, brought an extra surge of energy to Entebbe as African Chess Confederation (ACC) President, WIM Tshepiso Lopang, flew in to join the festivities.

President Tshepiso spent quality time interacting with the delegation and held a warm meeting with Mr. Andrew Bakiza, who is currently serving his first term of office as the Uganda Chess Federation (UCF) President. Watching the continent’s top chess leadership collaborate alongside Uganda’s fresh corporate-driven leadership builds immense confidence for the future of the mind sport on African soil.

The Ultimate Decider: Who Claims Gold and Glory?

While there have been plenty of light, shared moments among coaches and parents by the lakeside, make no mistake: there is absolute fire on the board.

For our first-time players, this week has been a masterclass of invaluable lessons. For others, the intense pressure of the podium race has brought tearful scenarios and heartbreaking game moments. With positions inside the prize brackets separating players by mere half-points, every single pawn push carries the weight of a nation.

Here is how the leaderboard shapes up as we head into tomorrow’s ultimate showdown:

  • Team Egypt: Currently leading the pack across most age categories. The Egyptian youth have shown absolute class, demonstrating precise endgame technique and deep opening preparation. Tomorrow, they fight to seal the deal and defend their continental dominance.
  • Team Uganda & Team Kenya: Giving chase right on Egypt’s heels! The East African powerhouse hosts are fighting tooth and nail, refusing to let the trophies leave without a massive final-round battle.

Looking Ahead: The Grand Finale

Tomorrow, it all goes down to the wire. Every single calculation, every tick of the clock, and every nerve will be tested as Africa’s brilliant youth race for gold and glory.

Once the dust settles on the digital boards, we look forward to a Grand Closing Ceremony on Friday evening. The ceremony will be a star-studded affair with numerous senior chess dignitaries expected to grace the presentation, including FIDE President, Mr. Arkady Dvorkovich.

Set up your boards, calm your nerves, and let’s get ready for an unforgettable final round. To all the players: May the best calculations win!
