It is with profound sadness, a heavy heart, and deep reverence that the entire African chess family mourns the untimely passing of one of Kenya’s brightest young stars, Kaloki Hawi, who passed away at the age of 19.
Hawi was not just an exceptionally gifted chess master; he was a gentle soul, a fierce competitor, a dedicated teammate, and an inspiration to thousands of young players across the continent. To achieve what he did before his 20th birthday is a testament to his rare brilliance and unwavering dedication to the game.
A Meteoric Ascent: From Grassroots to National No. 1
Hawi’s foundation in chess was built under the expert guidance of CM Ben Magana, who mentored him through his crucial foundational years. Combining this training with his academic journey at Brookside International School, Hawi rapidly transitioned from a promising junior talent into an absolute powerhouse on the 64 squares.
By 2024, at just 17 years old, Hawi officially attained the status of Kenya’s No. 1 ranked chess player, crossing the 2100 rating threshold with ease. By February 2026, he reached a peak FIDE rating of 2173, solidifying his position among East Africa’s elite grandmasters-in-the-making.
For three seasons, Hawi was an indispensable asset in the Kenya National Chess Premier League, competing with distinction for the KCB Chess Team as well as being a cherished member of the Mavens Chess Club under the tutorship of Coach Tom. Hawi was working with Coach Jimmy Balewa of uganda at the time of his passing.

Throughout his competitive career, Hawi compiled an incredible record of domestic and international honors:

- Winner, Kenya National Junior Championship (2024) (3rd place finish in 2025)
- Winner, National Schools Champion U17 (2024)
- Winner, 2025 Kenya National Youth & Cadet Chess Championship Playoffs
- International & Continental Stage:
- 1-Time Olympian for the Kenya National Team
- Africa Youth Chess Championships (Represented Kenya as Reigning National Champion 2023–2025)
- Africa Individual Chess Championship 2026 (Represented Kenya in Botswana)
- World Junior Chess Championship 2025 (Montenegro) & World Youth Championships (Brazil 2024, Albania 2025)
Hawi was actively preparing to represent Kenya once again on the world stage at the upcoming 46th World Chess Olympiad in September 2026.
Personal Reflections & Coaching Memories
My personal journey with Hawi began in July 2025, when he joined the Chess Kenya Elite Academy. It quickly became evident that his tactical vision and positional intuition were world-class. From October 2025, we embarked on a dedicated coaching relationship where I had the privilege of serving as his second during the Africa Youth Championships in November, and as his coach through his intense Olympiad preparation phase until March 2026.
Working alongside Hawi was a privilege. His humility was matched only by his deep analytical rigors. Whether analyzing critical playoff battles—such as his win against Jadon Simiyu in the 2025 Youth Playoffs or his sharp battle against Mataiga at the 2025 National Championships—Hawi always brought passion, sportsmanship, and pure love for the game.

His passing is an immense loss to his family, friends, teammates, and the entire Kenyan chess fraternity. Though his earthly game has ended far too soon, Kaloki Hawi’s legacy, games, and spirit will forever resonate throughout the chess halls of Kenya and Africa.
