Checkmate for Mental Health: Highlights from the UBC Central Districts Chess Championship
Chess met community health in Muyenga as the UBC Central Districts Chess Tournament brought over 70 players together for an action-packed 6-round Grand Swiss. Organized by Universal Health Care (UBC) Health, a non-profit focused on mental health awareness, HIV/AIDS prevention, and non-communicable diseases such as cancer, the event demonstrated how sports can be leveraged for community outreach.
Under the leadership of public health specialist Dr. Opul David Dickson, CEO of the Opul Conglomerate, UBC Health is championing chess as an entry point to combat mental health challenges across Uganda.
“Our short-term goal is to organize tournaments that motivate youth, students, and working professionals to embrace chess as a primary tool in preventing mental health conditions,” explained Dr. Opul. “Long term, we intend to open mental health support clinics across districts, starting this September.”
High-Stakes Competition & Masters on the Board
The tournament featured a classical rapid time control of 1 hour plus 30 seconds increment per move, attracting top-tier Ugandan talent alongside rising junior stars. Notable master-level participants included FM Harold Wanyama, Patrick Kawuma, and WIM Sana Omprakash Kayyar.
Following 6 intense rounds, FM Harold Wanyama emerged victorious as the overall tournament champion, securing 5.5 points. Wanyama sealed his triumph with a decisive victory over top-ranked woman player WIM Sana Omprakash Kayyar.

Building Momentum for Central Region Chess
The closing ceremony was graced by notable sports media figures, including Chess Dispatch’s Isaac Munanira. Special appreciation goes to Chief Arbiters Turyahabwe Christopher and Gonza Simon for running a seamless event, as well as co-sponsor Crown Beverages (Pepsi) for providing refreshments.
With plans to formalize the UBC Chess Club & Training Center, host monthly events, and expand community outreach, Dr. Opul’s vision is setting a new benchmark for chess in central Uganda.
