The Journey: From Nairobi to Kampala

Sana was born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya, growing up in a close-knit, supportive household alongside her parents, Omprakash Kayyar and Saritha Kayyar, and her sibling, Shoubhith Kayyar.

Sana With her Family

In 2021, a work-related transfer brought her father and the family across the border to Kampala, Uganda. It was here, in the heart of Uganda, that Sana took up chess. While many chess players begin moving pieces before they can read, Sana embraced the game as a teenager after relocating to Kampala, Uganda.

What happened next was extraordinary. Sana absorbed the concepts, positional strategies, and tactical nuances of chess at lightning speed. By 2022, she was officially registered under the Uganda Chess Federation, launching a career trajectory that few in the region had ever witnessed.

Historic Heights: East Africa’s First and Only Confirmed WIM

  • 2023–2026 National Champion: Crowned Uganda National Women’s Champion multiple times and dominated major regional events like the Zabasajja Memorial, Kantiti Championship, and African Youth Rapid Championship.
  • 2024 Olympiad Debut (Budapest): Earned her Woman FIDE Master (WFM) title representing Uganda on the world stage.
  • 2026 Milestone: Sana reached a career-peak rating of 2072 and officially earned her title as a Woman International Master (WIM).

A Historic Milestone for the Region:

Sana stands as the first confirmed and only Woman International Master (WIM) in East Africa. Her title represents a long-sought, highly coveted achievement that places Ugandan women’s chess firmly on the global map.

Leading on the World Stage: Olympiad Excellence

At the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan (September 2026), Sana anchored Board 1 for the Uganda National Ladies Team with astonishing maturity and poise. Facing top international opponents, she delivered an exceptional performance, scoring 7½ points out of 11 games with an impressive performance rating of 2084.

Her stellar form on the top board pushed the team forward, steering Uganda into a prime position to secure a coveted spot in the FIDE World Cup—a historic feat that brought immense pride to the entire nation and the African continent.

A Lesson for Parents and Young Players: Investing in Talent

Sana’s journey is more than a list of accolades; it is an inspiration to every young girl holding a chess piece and every parent pondering whether to invest in their child’s dreams.

  1. It Is Never Too Late to Excel: Starting her competitive journey after moving to Uganda in 2021, Sana proved that with discipline, focus, and rapid absorption, dedication can bridge any gap.
  2. The Power of Family Support: Behind every champion is a strong foundation. The sacrifice, encouragement, and commitment of the Kayyar family—navigating relocations, tournament travels, and intensive training—show how pivotal parent involvement is to unlocking a child’s full potential.
  3. Sportsmanship & Resilience: Balancing high-level international travel across Africa and Europe with her studies at international schools (including Rainbow International, Aga Khan Academy, and Kampala Diplomatic International), Sana has embodied resilience and sportsmanship.

Gratitude to the Village Behind the Champion

As the Ugandan chess community, we celebrate what women’s and junior chess is accomplishing together.

While the family humbly prefers not to single out individuals, we extend our heartfelt, special thanks to everyone near and far who has placed a building block on Sana’s career. From national federation officials, coaches, and school tutors to training partners and supportive well-wishers—your contributions have helped nurture a true gem in our midst.
