Watchers Team A Dethrones MUBS A as the Race for the Super League Heats Up in Rounds 5 & 6 – One Round to Go.
The 2026 Central Uganda Region Chess League continued to deliver edge-of-the-seat drama as action returned to the Sports View Hotel in Kireka for Rounds 5 and 6. Just a week after MUBS Team A sent shockwaves through the league by taking down top-seeded giants Mulago Kings, the leaderboards took another dramatic turn in a high-stakes Sunday showdown.

Watchers Team A Flexes Muscle, Crushes MUBS A
Coming into Round 5 on 8 match points, MUBS Team A looked virtually unstoppable. However, Watchers Team A proved to be an insurmountable obstacle. Powered by a heavyweight lineup featuring FM Haruna Nsubuga, David Muwanguzi, Rajab Kamoga, and WCM Shakira Ampaire, Watchers A unleashed a commanding performance, dismantling MUBS A with an emphatic 5 – 1 victory.
Watchers A followed up their Round 5 statement by storming through Round 6, handily defeating KTCA Team A 5 – 1 to solidify their sole position at the top of the table with 16 board points (11 match points).
Meanwhile, MUBS Team A managed a quick bounce-back in Round 6 with a 4½ – 1½ win against MUK Echelons, keeping them in 3rd place with 15 match points (23.5 board points), right behind Mulago Kings Chess Club (15 match points, 24 board points).

Standings After Round 6: The Battle for the Top 8
With the 7-round league serving as the crucial gateway to qualify 8 teams into the National Super League, the fight in the mid-table is nothing short of a battle royale.
Here is how the top of the leaderboard looks heading into the grand finale:
| Rank | Team | Match Points (TB1) | Board Points (TB2) |
| 1 | Watchers Team A | 16 | 27.5 |
| 2 | Mulago Kings Chess Club | 15 | 24.0 |
| 3 | MUBS Team A | 15 | 23.5 |
| 4 | KTCA Team A | 12 | 20.0 |
| 5 | UBC Health Chess Club | 10 | 25.5 |
| 6 | MUK Echelons | 10 | 23.5 |
| 7 | MUK A | 10 | 22.5 |
| 8 | Strategic Minds Chess Club | 10 | 22.5 |
The Qualification Scramble
While the top 3 look safe for Super League promotion, the border of the Top 8 qualification zone is dangerously tight.
- The 10-Point Logjam: A staggering eight teams sit clustered between 5th and 13th place. KTCA Team B (9th, 22 pts), Vineyard Archbishops (10th, 21.5 pts), Checkmate Alliance Team (11th, 21 pts), Silent Killers (12th, 20.5 pts), and CAM Strategic Chess Club (13th, 18.5 pts) are all locked at 10 match points. A single board win in Round 7 could mean the difference between earning a Super League ticket or missing out entirely!
- Outside Looking In: MUBS Team B (14th, 9 pts), Mpigi Chess Club (15th, 9 pts), and Mulago Knights (16th, 9 pts) still retain mathematical chances to crash the top 8 if results fall their way on the final day.
Youthful Energy and New Contenders Step Up
This season’s Multi Sports-sponsored Central League has quietly become one of the most thrilling editions in recent history. With a couple of traditional big clubs absent from the field, the spotlight has shifted to a record-breaking influx of vibrant young players and newly formed academies.
Teams like 7 AM Chess Academy, Shree Sahajanand, St. Cyprian, and KTCA have injected unprecedented tactical hunger into every round, proving that the future of Ugandan chess is already taking over.
