Battle Lines Drawn: Chess Tensions Rise on Day 3 in Entebbe AYCC

The 17th African Youth Chess Championships have truly found their stride at the Imperial Botanical Beach Hotel. Following a grand opening ceremony that brought together high-ranking continent officials in the late evening of Day 1, the tournament hit the ground running. While things kicked off with a few tricky logistical hurdles—requiring the technical team to harmonize player names rapidly—the event stabilized completely immediately after Round 1.

By Day 3, with the first three rounds officially in the books, any early-stage adjustments have given way to pure, unadulterated tactical warfare on the boards.

A Venue Maxed Out to the Limit

The tournament’s massive layout is split across three distinct zones at the venue to accommodate the high turnout of continental talent:

  • The Big Hall: Completely filled to maximum capacity, this room hosts the explosive, fast-paced matches of the youngest brackets: the Under 8, Under 10, and Under 12 categories.
  • The Second Large Hall: Dedicated entirely to the mid-tier battlegrounds, holding the highly competitive fields of the Under 14 and Under 16 players.
  • The Special Small Hall: Reserved exclusively for the Under 18 elite and the top-board players from every single category. This room features a much quieter, high-pressure atmosphere where the games are noticeably tenser and every single move carries monumental weight.

A High-Caliber Continental Technical Team

To keep an event of this magnitude running smoothly, Chief Organizer and UCF President Andrew Bakiza has deployed a high-caliber technical team. The championship is securely facilitated by an elite panel of highly experienced African arbiters hailing from over 10 different countries. This robust international oversight gives the tournament a truly prestigious, fully continental feel, ensuring absolute standard compliance across every single board.

No Easy Points: The Grind Begins

As the event progresses past Round 3, the grace period is officially over. The pairings are getting tighter, the combinations deeper, and the mistakes more costly. This is especially evident in the older categories, where seasoned junior veterans are locking horns in grueling, multi-hour positional grinds.

With six intense rounds still to go in the classical section , the battle for FIDE titles and continental supremacy is heating up. No one is yielding an inch on the shores of Lake Victoria!
