Gold, Glory, and Greatness: The 17th AYCC Concludes in Entebbe!
The pieces have been packed away, the clocks have fallen silent, and the serene shores of Lake Victoria are a little quieter today. After nine days of pure adrenaline, intense calculations, and unmatched sportsmanship, the 17th African Youth Chess Championship (AYCC) 2026 at the Imperial Botanical Beach Hotel in Entebbe has officially come to a spectacular close.
From administrative hurdles on day one to absolute chess mastery by the final round, this tournament will go down in history as a true celebration of continental talent.
A Round 9 Firefight: Drama on the Top Boards
If anyone thought the final round would be a quiet walk to the podium, they were sorely mistaken. Round 9 was absolute warfare on the 64 squares, with players pushing their limits for a chance at continental glory.
The absolute headline of the final round belonged to the Under-18 Open category. In a heated, razor-sharp battle that went right down to the wire, Kenya’s brilliant young FM Jadon Simiyu pulled off a stunning upset, taking down the hitherto untouched Egyptian powerhouse, FM Ahmed Kandil. It was a game full of tactical fireworks that left spectators breathless. Despite the dramatic final-round loss, FM Kandil’s dominant performance throughout the week still secured him the ultimate prize, as he was officially crowned the AYCC 2026 U18 Champion!
The Final Medal Standings: Egypt Dominates, East Africa Rises
When the dust settled, the final medal tally perfectly reflected the narrative of the entire week. While Team Egypt proved their elite class by sealing the top spot, the East African giants—hosts Uganda and neighbors Kenya—put up a magnificent fight to establish themselves as dominant forces on the continent.

The chess action didn’t stop with the classical games! To cap off the festival of chess, a fast-paced Rapid and Blitz Tournament was organized. For a registration fee of just $10, players got one final opportunity to flex their tactical muscles, test their bullet reflexes, and settle friendly rivalries under extreme time pressure. It was a beautiful, high-energy addition that kept the competitive spirit buzzing right until the final hours.
A Grand Closing Ceremony and Passing the Torch
The tournament reached its emotional crescendo on Friday evening during a glamorous, star-studded Grand Closing Ceremony. The room was packed with local dignitaries, proud parents, coaches, and a proud gathering of different African Federation officials.
Led by the host, Uganda Chess Federation President Mr. Andrew Bakiza, the ceremony celebrated not just the winners, but the collective growth of youth chess in Africa.
In a poignant final moment, the official hosting flag was handed over to the delegation from Botswana, who will proudly host the next generation of masters at the AYCC 2027!
Farewell to the Lake Shores
As the delegations head back to all corners of the continent, the brilliant, laughing, and hyper-focused kids who filled the halls will be deeply missed on the shores of Lake Victoria. They brought passion, tears, friendships, and historic games to Entebbe.
