March Madness: A Month of Chess Tournaments
March was a whirlwind month for chess enthusiasts, with a tournament every weekend. The month kicked off on Saturday, March 1st, with Comrades Chess Academy and Chess Box Academy organizing separate events.
Innovation Cup Season 4
The Chess Box tournament, also known as Innovation Cup Season 4, drew a large crowd, including an impressive U1900 section. This event set the tone for the month, showcasing the growing popularity of chess.
Women’s Day Tournament
The following weekend, March 8th, marked Women’s Day, and the women’s tournament was a competitive affair. Milly Takali proved formidable, taking the top spot at Gloria Gardens in Namugongo.
Gambit Invitational
The Gambit Invitational, held on March 15-16th, featured 14 players showcasing their skills. Junior player Akut, just 17 years old, took down a strong field with a remarkable display of skill.
Hisense Chess Tournament Postponed
Unfortunately, the Hisense Chess tournament was postponed to a later date.
Pearl of Africa Individual Schools Chess Tournament
On March 22nd, the Pearl of Africa Individual Schools chess tournament took place, organized by Brand Chess Life Academy and hosted at Emmanuel College Kazo.
Wampeewo Rapid Chess Tournament
The Wampeewo Rapid Chess tournament Edition 2, held on March 29th, saw rising star Wabwire take the trophy in a field of energetic youth.
Ntare School Open
The month closed with the Ntare School Open on March 30th, which coincided with Eid day for the Muslim community.
Other tournaments were the St Mbuga vocational Chess and the Entebbe rapid which was organized by the General Secretary Mr Ojok Patrick.
Celebrating Milestones
This busy month of tournaments highlights the remarkable growth of chess in schools and at the grassroots level. While there’s still much work to be done, we celebrate the small milestones reached. Special recognition goes to the academies and organizers pushing the boundaries of chess daily.
Match of the Month
