Celebrating a Legacy: The Father Grimes Chess Tournament
The Father Grimes Chess Tournament has become an iconic event in Ugandan chess, thanks to the visionary Reverend Father Damian Grimes. During his 42-year tenure at Namasagali, Father Grimes introduced chess to local schools, sparking a small but vibrant tournament competition. Over the years, the tournament has grown exponentially, with over 25 successful editions.

A Tribute to Father Grimes
Sadly, Father Grimes passed away in 2025, but his legacy lives on through the countless young chess players he inspired. Many of Uganda’s top players owe their success to the Father Grimes era and the tournament that bears his name.

The Tournament’s Success
The latest edition of the tournament, held from May 4th to 7th at Our Lady of Africa School – Namilyango, was a resounding success. Over 150 schools participated, with more than 200 teams showcasing their skills. The event featured 9 rounds, with massive attendance at the opening and closing ceremonies.

A Celebration for All
The tournament was a joyous occasion for players, administrators, coaches, arbiters, teachers, and school staff. The event’s leaders in various sections were:

1. Holistic Junior School Mitooma
2. Kids Pioneer Pri School

3. Caltec Academy Makerere

Ladies Secondary
1. St Andre Kaggwa Gombe High School
2. Wampeewo Ntakke
3. Gayaza High School

Special Guests
The tournament was honored by the presence of the Blindfold King of Chess, Grandmaster Timur Gurayev, who encouraged young players to study their games to improve. Uganda Chess Federation President Emmanuel Mwaka also attended, emphasizing the importance of focus and discipline in chess.

Notable Performances
One standout performance was by Pido Edwin, who demonstrated remarkable stamina by winning all his games with a perfect 9/9 score on board 1 of the Secondary sections.

Some Notable games came from various players who showcased skill and stamina. These are some of the games that showed a fighting atmosphere and friendly competition in the young blood.

The Father Grimes Chess Tournament continues to thrive, inspiring a new generation of young chess players and paying tribute to the enduring legacy of its founder.
