Chess League 2025 – Round 1

The 2025 edition of the National Chess League, sponsored by Premier Bet and organized by the Uganda Chess Federation, commenced with significant changes aimed at enhancing competition and promoting chess development.

Key Changes:

  • Regional Representation: The league now features regional chess representatives, marking a new era in the Federation’s structure. This move is expected to foster healthy competition and talent development across different regions.
  • New Venue: Breaking away from traditional hotel setups, the league was hosted at the SOM Chess Academy, which brought a premium touch to the event. This change is seen as a positive step towards enhancing chess tournament organization.
  • New Teams and Players: Several new teams emerged, with notable player transfers, including the new chess club CNA, which has attracted players from the dominant Kireka Chess Club. This influx of talent is anticipated to raise the competition bar.

Tournament Highlights:

  1. The event commenced with inspiring words from Chess President Mwaka Emmanuel and Technical Director Teeeba Jordan, setting the tone for an exciting competition.

2. The teams competed in a series of games, starting with classical, followed by rapid, and ending with Blitz games. A memorable match saw Sanya Derrick from Kireka A secure a draw against a promising opponent Mbowa Shadick, showcasing the competitive spirit of the league.

3. Lunch was provided for members who booked earlier, adding to the overall positive experience.

The National Chess League is Uganda’s biggest marathon chess event, bringing together numerous players to compete in teams and promoting chess excellence nationwide. With these changes, the league is poised to attract more talent and enthusiasm, further solidifying its position as a premier chess competition in Uganda.
