The Rwabushenyi Memorial Open Chess Championship 2024 started on Thursday 5th December with games in the Open Category and ladies category while the junior Category will be a one-day event on Saturday 7th December. It is being held at Nob View Hotel Ntinda from the 5th to the 8th of December 2024 (a 4-day event). The defending champion is the chess president Eng. Mwaka Emmanuel who isn’t playing this year’s edition. The event is sponsored by the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority and the Uganda Chess Federation in memory of Cyril Rwabushenyi, who is a former UCF President (1996 – 1998) and worked as a Director with CAA.
The tournament is being held in 3 categories; the Open (104 registered players), Ladies (35 registered players), and Juniors sections (49 registered players), giving an overall total of 192 chess players registered for the event across the 3 sections. First up, a heart-stopping escape for CM Egesa. Facing off against the talented Junior player Mulondo, Egesa found himself teetering on the brink of defeat. But with a display of nerves of steel and some brilliant tactical maneuvering, he managed to claw his way back from the jaws of defeat. Phew!
Meanwhile, rising star Mugagga Allan continued his meteoric rise, taking down two seasoned chess masters – Haruna Nsubuga and Kamoga Rajab. This player is a force to be reckoned with, and his victories today sent shockwaves through the tournament.
