Kireka Chess Championship: A Grand Finale to 2025
The Kireka Chess Championship has become a staple in Uganda’s chess calendar, and this year’s edition is living up to expectations. Taking place at the Sports View Hotel in Kireka, along the Kenya-Uganda Highway, the tournament has attracted top players from Uganda and beyond, including Zambian CM Zulu Thomas.

Uganda’s chess elite, such as Harold Wanyama, Haruna Nsubuga, and Kawuma Patrick, are among the notable participants. The event has also drawn high-level arbiters, including IA Kimera and Cynthia from Kenya.

One of the highlights of the tournament is Munanira Isaac of Gambit Chess Club, who has put a bounty of UGX 50,000 on each head of Kireka Chess Club players. The competition is fierce, with surprises already emerging in the early rounds. In round 2, chess masters Haruna and Kawuma suffered unexpected losses to underdogs.

The tournament is sponsored by MTN Uganda and Manda Mobile, with players sporting orange attire, making it the most orange Uganda Chess event. The ladies section is also delivering exciting games, adding to the overall thrill of the championship.
Special thanks go to Mr. Were Bob, patron of Kireka Chess Club, and the organizing team, led by Sanya Derrick and Kafuko John, for putting together this spectacular event.
