Chess Fever in Kampala: A Tale of Two Tournaments
On April 26, 2025, Kampala buzzed with chess excitement as two notable tournaments took center stage: the Great Thinkers Chess Tournament and the HAM Chess Tournament.


Great Thinkers Chess Tournament
Over 200 players gathered to showcase their skills in a spirit of friendly competition. The open category, featuring top prizes like laptops, attracted a tough field, including Wabwire, Kur, and Pido. In the end, young Wabwire from KTLC Chess Club dominated with a flawless 7/7 score, demonstrating his exceptional class and strength. The tournament was expertly organized by the Great Thinkers Chess Academy, led by Jude Kalanzi.








HAM Chess Tournament
Meanwhile, the HAM Chess Tournament drew various chess masters, who battled it out despite a delayed start. Harold Wanyama stormed to victory, crushing his opponents. In the ladies’ section, Asaba Juliet from KTLC Chess Club shone, showcasing her rising star status. Harold took home 1 million Ugandan shillings as the winner.
