Kireka Chess Championship 2025: A Grand Finale to the Year
The Kireka Chess Championship has concluded today, December 31, 2025, marking a fitting end to the year. This year’s event was a remarkable one, with many standout moments and new winners emerging. Notably, it was the first major Uganda Chess Federation (UCF) tournament under the new leadership of Mr. Bakiza Andrew, who was present at the closing ceremony.
The tournament attracted top players from seven federations worldwide, making for a highly competitive field. Players from South Sudan impressed with incredible upsets and secured two podium finishes. The event featured three categories: Open, Ladies, and Junior, with the latter two running for the final two days.
Ngong Samuel emerged victorious in the Open section with an astounding performance of 8/8, while Sana Omprakash Kayyar took top honors in the Ladies’ section. Kireka Chess Club boss Bob Were and sponsors Manda Mobile, who “colored the event,” received special thanks for their efforts. Winners received cash prizes, trophies, and medals.
