The Ultimate African Chess Showdown in Botswana 👑♟️

The continental chess arena witnessed pure magic as the 2026 African Individual Chess Championship unfolded in style. Hosted by the Botswana Chess Federation under the auspices of the African Chess Confederation (ACC), the flagship event took over the beautiful, three-star Cresta Lodge Jwaneng from 18 June to 27 June 2026.

The atmosphere was nothing short of colorful. Bringing together over 100 of the continent’s finest minds, the tournament was graced by an array of masters and grandmasters whose tactical supremacy and sharp play completely dominated the field. For nine grueling rounds of classical Swiss system chess, the boards were a battleground of intense focus, heartbreak, and pure brilliance.

The Ugandan Warriors: Fighting Against the Tide 🇺🇬

Uganda’s flag was flown high by a resilient contingent who went toe-to-toe with Africa’s absolute elite. While they missed out on the ultimate podium rewards in what proved to be an incredibly tough field, their round-by-round journey was a testament to their fighting spirit.

The Open Section: Egesa Emmanuel & Nyola Wasswa Mark

In the Open section, Egesa Emmanuel and Nyola Wasswa Mark carried the hopes of the nation. Facing a field heavily stacked with grandmasters capable of taking down any opponent in their way, every single round was an uphill tactical battle. Following them through their rounds—as tracked on platforms like the FIDE updates and the Lichess broadcast—showed their immense resilience. They stood ground against formidable opposition, carving out sharp tactical positions, though the unforgiving nature of continental tiebreaks and master-level endgames meant missing out on the massive cash rewards.

The Ladies’ Section: Sana Omprakash

In the Women’s section, Uganda was proudly represented by Sana Omprakash. She stepped onto the boards in a stunningly beautiful event that ultimately transformed into a masterclass of continental dominance. Sana battled hard through the nine rounds, showcasing patience and tactical growth against some of the most decorated female masters on the planet.

The Algerian Masterclass: Bilel Bellahcene Defends the Throne 🇩🇿

The story of the tournament belongs to Algeria’s Grandmaster Bilel Bellahcene. His performance was nothing short of remarkable.

The Open event quickly turned into a spectacular two-horse race between Bellahcene and Egypt’s legendary seven-time continental champion, GM Bassem Amin. By Round 5, both masters were locked at the top with a near-perfect 4.5/5 points. The turning point came in a blockbuster Round 6 clash where Bellahcene defeated Amin to seize sole possession of the lead.

Though the Egyptian grandmaster showed incredible resilience by winning his final three games to force a tie at 7.5/9 points, it was Bellahcene who clinched the gold medal on tiebreaks (based on opponents’ average ratings). With this victory, Bellahcene successfully defended his title, joining an elite club of multiple-time African champions.

Egyptian Dominance in the Women’s Section 🇪🇬

The ladies’ tournament evolved into an extraordinary display of sisterly dominance from Egypt. WGM Shahenda Wafa and her sister WGM Shrook Wafa completely controlled the field, both finishing undefeated at the summit with 7.5/9 points. When the calculations settled, it was Shahenda Wafa who captured the official continental crown on tiebreaks, securing her fourth individual African Championship title!

The Spoils of War: Grand Rewards & What Lies Ahead 💰🏆

The 2026 African Individual Chess Championship featured an impressive total prize fund of USD 30,050 distributed according to the HORT system for ties. As outlined in the official event regulations—which you can verify by reviewing Screenshot 2026-07-03 183921.jpg—the top finishers walked away with substantial financial backing:

  • Open Section Winner (Algeria’s Bilel Bellahcene): Earned a massive USD 6,500 cash prize.
  • Women’s Section Winner (Egypt’s Shahenda Wafa): Claimed a stellar USD 4,000 first-place reward.

Beyond the immediate financial windfalls, the stakes were incredibly high for what lies ahead. As dictated by FIDE regulations, the winners earned the highly coveted titles of 2026 African Individual Chess Champions, gold medals, and crucial qualification pathways to global FIDE events such as the World Cup.

The event was a beautiful celebration of African chess intellect. While our Ugandan heroes didn’t bring home the trophies this time around, the invaluable experience gained against the continent’s elite grandmasters ensures that Uganda’s chess future remains brighter than ever!
