Kireka Team A Continues Dominance in 2024 National Chess League
The 2024 National Chess League is heating up. Round 10 concluded with Kireka Team A maintaining its lead. While the defending champions of 2023 face the near-impossible task of losing all remaining rounds to be caught, the league is far from over with four rounds remaining.


Highlights from Round 10
One of the most exciting matchups saw the junior-heavy Mango Tech team push the seasoned champions to their limits, securing 2 points out of 6 boards. A standout performance came from National Junior Champion Matthew Mwase, who defeated Olympian FM Haruna Nsubuga after maneuvering him into a losing position. The game got tense after Haruna sacrificed a pawn in the opening but couldn’t outplay the junior champion who proved highly accurate.

This year, the league has seen a remarkable expansion, growing from 40 teams to nearly 60, with a significant increase in junior teams. This influx of young talent has injected a new level of competitiveness into the event.

The introduction of team uniforms this year has added a professional touch to the league. As the league takes a break until January 2025, the chess community in Uganda is eagerly anticipating the Kireka Open Chess Championship, which will conclude the year.
