Ten days have flown by since the curtain fell on the Uganda National Chess League 2024, but the echoes of strategic battles and triumphant roars still linger in the air. This year’s league was a marathon, a thrilling spectacle that stretched across months, even spilling over into the early months of 2025 – a testament to the sheer dedication and passion of Uganda’s chess community.

Hosted primarily at the welcoming Nob View Hotel, the league was a collaborative effort, orchestrated by the Uganda Chess Federation (UCF) and generously sponsored by Premier Bet. This partnership brought together a record-breaking 57 chess clubs, transforming the venue into a vibrant hub of intellectual combat.
We witnessed the full spectrum of chess brilliance, with players battling it out in Classical, Rapid, and Blitz sections. Each format brought its own unique intensity, showcasing the versatility and strategic depth of Uganda’s chess talent.
The grand finale, the long-awaited closing ceremony, was a fitting celebration of the league’s success. The entire UCF executive team, alongside esteemed officials from Premier Bet, graced the event. UCF President Mwaka Emmanuel delivered an inspiring speech, highlighting the league’s growth and the unwavering spirit of the players. Premier Bet’s representative also shared their enthusiasm for supporting the development of chess in Uganda, emphasizing the importance of nurturing young talent.

Now, let’s talk about the winners! In the prestigious Classical Chess section, Kireka A Chess Club emerged victorious, followed closely by the formidable Mulago Kings and the ever-strong Soroti Chess Club.

The Rapid section saw Mulago Kings take the crown, with Soroti and Kireka A once again proving their consistency.

And in the lightning-fast Blitz section, Soroti Chess Club showcased their speed and precision, claiming the top spot, with Gambit Chess Club and Mulago Kings rounding out the podium.

One of the most exciting developments of the league was the rise of Gambit Chess Club. This relatively new name on the scene stormed into the top rankings, finishing a commendable fourth in the Classical section, narrowly missing the podium. Their performance was a breath of fresh air, a testament to their dedication and strategic prowess.

Speaking of Gambit, let’s dive into a particularly memorable game from Round 14 of the Classical section. The clash between Gambit’s board 1, Wanderema Paul, and Farouq Fauza, was a masterclass in pressure play. Wanderema’s relentless attacks and strategic maneuvering eventually forced Fauza to succumb, showcasing the raw talent and tactical brilliance within the Gambit team. This game perfectly encapsulated the intensity and excitement that defined the entire league. It was a game that left spectators on the edge of their seats, and one that will be discussed for months to come.
The Uganda National Chess League 2024 was more than just a tournament; it was a celebration of community, strategy, and the unwavering spirit of chess. It was a testament to the growth of chess in Uganda, and a promise of even greater things to come. We look forward to seeing the continued development of these talented players and clubs as they continue to refine their skills and make their mark on the Ugandan chess scene.
